Load of demand for ammo
First-time owners are buying guns in record numbers, but finding that loading that gun is difficult, if not impossible.
Retailers just can't keep bullets in stock.
"I can sell a gun, but I can't sell ammo," said Carrie Mentel, co-owner of Georgia Outdoor Sports on U.S. Highway 29 in Madison County. "Right now, I could sell just as much as I could get."
The scarcity comes from here and abroad: American firearms owners are stockpiling ammunition for self-defense, at the same time as demand for the brass, copper and lead that goes into bullets is rising in economically emerging countries like China and India.
"It's a matter of supply and demand," said Mentel.
The Hull gun shop hasn't been able to buy certain types of ammo - including popular .38- and .380-caliber cartridges - since October.
"I expect a couple of cases of .380 will arrive in a couple of days, but they'll be bought up in no time," Mentel said.
Clyde Armory Gun Shop & Law Enforcement Supply last year sold a box of 50 .38-caliber bullets for less than $10, but today they go for about $24 a box, according to Josh Smith, chief operating officer for the Bogart-based gun supplier.
"A lot of ammunition has about doubled in price just over the past six months," Smith said.
Some casual shooters now are buying equipment to reload their spent cartridges, according to Mentel.
Clyde Armory and other shops saw a sharp uptick in gun sales in the weeks and months leading up to Barack Obama's election in November.
The then-candidate promised he would reinstate a ban on assault-style weapons that expired in 2004. That led to an explosion in semiautomatic weapons sales at places like Clyde Armory, which still has back-orders for some kinds of firearms.
Though some people fear they'll lose their Second Amendment right to bear arms, others simply live in fear, according to Mentel.
"A lot of people we're seeing have no previous experience with guns," Mentel said. "They're also buying guns for their wives and daughters. A lot of it is they knew someone who had their house broken into and they are worried about their safety."
